Illustrative report. Figures show the shape of a real record, not a real student.

Students need clear expectations

Nobody wants to be the only one doing it the right way.

A student who writes their own essay while classmates hand in generated work is not being principled, they are being penalised for it. When the whole class writes on the record, that calculation changes. The shortcut stops paying, the effort starts counting again, and most students settle into doing the work because it is simply what everyone is doing.

Beyond the grade

You can finally teach the part that was invisible.

Feedback on a finished essay can only ever be about the finished essay. The record shows the decisions behind it, and the decisions are where the learning is.

For the faculty member

Teach the process, not just the product.

You can see where the argument stalled, which paragraph was rebuilt four times, where the thinking actually happened. That is advice you could never give before, because you were never in the room while it was written. It also still gives you something to stand behind if a paper is ever questioned.

  • Replay any draft from the first keystroke
  • See where a student struggled, not just where they scored
  • Print an evidence report if a paper is questioned

For the student

A clearer way to learn.

A grade on a finished essay says almost nothing about how to write the next one. When a teacher can see how the piece was built, the advice gets specific: this is where the argument lost its thread, this is the paragraph you rewrote until it worked. Being believed is the floor. Being taught better is the point.

How it works

Set up your course

Create the assignment and share one link with your students. About three minutes, start to finish.

Students write

They open the link and write their assignment in any browser. Nothing for a student to install.

You watch the recording

Students submit, you sign in to EssayGuard, and the recording of the completed work is waiting for you.

What a replay looks like

Try it out.

Below is one sitting from a writing session, built from the same kinds of events EssayGuard records for a real assignment. Play it, or drag the scrubber to just after the five minute mark and watch the second sentence get abandoned and rebuilt. That is what a person writing looks like, and it is the thing a finished document can never show you. Pasted text stays marked in red for the rest of the session.

Session replaySimulated

Ostrom's fieldwork in the Swiss alpine commons did not refute Hardin so much as change the question he was asking. Where he saw an inevitability, she saw an absence of the institutions her villagers had spent four centuries building. The distinction matters because policy written from the first premise reaches for the state or the market, and policy written from the second reaches for the people who are already there. Collective action problems are rarely solved by ownership alone, but by rules that the people bound by them have a hand in making, monitoring and revising.

What it does not do

Privacy and respect for students are of the utmost importance.

EssayGuard reads how a document was built, and nothing else.
